Boat Accident in India’s Madhya Pradesh State Kills 9
INDIA – A boat accident in India’s Madhya Pradesh State that took place in the Bargi Dam reservoir in the state’s Jabalpur district on Thursday killed at least 9 people, according to authorities on Friday.
The accident occurred when a tourism boat overturned due to a sudden storm, and since then a major rescue operation has been underway.
Atul Singh, a senior police official, said five more bodies were recovered in the morning, taking the total toll to nine. He said Indian Army personnel arrived at the site to join the rescue operation.
Among them were that of a mother and her 4-year-old son who were locked together in a final embrace.
Singh said some bodies are still believed to be trapped inside. He, however, added that the exact number is unclear due to poor visibility.
“So far around 28 people have been safely rescued,” he said, adding that six others are believed to be missing.
The boat is believed to have been carrying 40 to 45 passengers when it capsized.
