Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye Named Presidential Candidate for 2027 Election
BURUNDI – Burundi’s president Evariste Ndayishimiye was on Sunday named the presidential candidate for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) party in the 2027 election.
The party announced the nomination on the US social media company X’s platform following its extraordinary congress held in Gitega, the country’s political capital.
The CNDD-FDD, a former Hutu rebel movement, has been in power since 2005.
Ndayishimiye, 57, assumed power in 2020, after succeeding Pierre Nkurunziza, who had ruled the country for 15 years when he died in office after suffering from cardiac arrest.
Under the 2018 Constitution, the president may serve up to two consecutive seven-year terms.
Ndayishimiye pledged to advance the party’s vision, promising to strengthen the rule of law and promote sustainable development for all Burundians.
