Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons Leaving Office in May
USA – The Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons will be leaving office at the end of May, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
“Director Lyons has been a great leader of ICE and key player in helping the Trump administration remove murderers, rapists, pedophiles, terrorists and gang members from American communities,” Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement.
“He jumpstarted an agency that had not been allowed to do its job for four years. Thanks to his leadership, American communities are safer,” Mullin added.
Lyons’ last day will be May 31. It is unclear who will fill the role after his departure.
ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed leader since 2017 when Director Sarah Saldana left the agency. The prospects for a candidate to clear the chamber have grown increasingly dim as the agency continues to face sweeping opposition from Democrats as well as key Senate Republicans, who question the agency’s immigration tactics.
ICE has been at the forefront of US President Donald Trump‘s nationwide immigration crackdown and a central focus of clients demanding the closure of the agency.
The popular uproar gained significant momentum after two demonstrators were fatally shot by federal agents in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in January.
