SMAN 72 Jakarta School Explosion in Indonesia Leaves 55 Injured
INDONESIA – At least 55 people including students and teachers were injured on Friday after an explosion in a mosque in the State Senior High School 72 (SMAN 72 Jakarta) according to authorities.
The explosion occurred around 12:15 PM local time.
According to local reports, there were more than one explosion, with the first 2 happening during the morning prayers inside the school area, while a third one at the back gate.
Authorities were able to recover an improvised explosive device, a remote, and a long-barreled airsoft gun, along with a revolver.
As of reporting this, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police and the Indonesian Navy personnel were handling the crime scene.
Majority of the injured sustained burns, blurry vision and hearing problems after the blasts impaired their hearing.
The victims were first given first aid at the scene and later taken to nearest hospitals including the Naval Health Center at Kodamar for those with serious injuries, and others to Yarsi, Pertamina and RSI Cempaka Putih hospitals.
The counterterrorism unit was also involved in the investigation to determine whether the explosions had any links to terrorism.
Jakarta Government to Cover Medical Costs
The medical costs for the victims of the explosions will be paid for by the Jakarta Provincial Government, according to the Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.
“We will take full responsibility for all expenses,” Anung said, adding that “all medical costs will be covered by the provincial government, regardless of the hospital.”
He assured his government’s commitment to ensure that all victims get the medical assistance they need.
He added that he had instructed the local mayor as well as the Education and Health offices to handle the matter.
Expressing his condolences to the victims, he stated that among the victims, one was undergoing a surgery.
“There are 55 victims, and I spoke with them earlier. One will undergo surgery,” he said.
