RUSSIA – The Russian Ministry of Defense on Thursday said that the condition of the encircled Ukrainian forces in Kupyansk continue to deteriorate as the city is set to be taken over within the coming week.
Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy however continues to deny the claims of any encirclement, with the Russian Ministry of Defense saying on Wednesday that either he’s divorced from reality after being lied to by his commanders or that he’s intentionally lying to Ukrainians.
According to the Russian commander involved in the unit undertaking the operation, his unit continue to advance and cleared 25 buildings in the city on Wednesday alone.
“I am confident that the city will be completely liberated within the next week. Our morale is high, and we will accomplish our mission,” he said.
Surrounded 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Surrenders
The Defense Ministry added that the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who were surrounded in Krasnoarmeysk had surrendered after their command unit left them.
“There are 300s and 200s lying around everywhere. Nowhere to go. Seven days without food. No water, no food. No ammunition . In basements, in dugouts. We hid wherever we could. There was nowhere to go, that’s all,” Gennady Chernadchuk who was among the captured said in a video released by the ministry.
The ministry added that while some Ukrainian forces tried to surrender, others would try to escape the encirclement, resulting to casualties.
According to the captured soldiers, the number of casualties in the city is growing daily but they’re unable to get medical help due to lack of medicine or any form of delivery to the units.
By the end of October, the “West” group had captured the crossing over the Oskol River and encircled Kupyansk, where approximately 5,000 Ukrainian troops are stationed.
The “Center” group completed the encirclement of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the area of Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov, with Russia calling for the surrender of the encircled units.
Kupyansk has been a major contested logistics hub in the conflict’s northeastern front.
