JAMMU & KASHMIR – At least 7 people lost their lives and dozens others were injured after flash floods triggered by cloudburst hit Jammu and Kashmir. The cloudburst struck the Janglote area of Kathua district during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who is a member of parliament from Udhampur-Kathua-Doda Lok Sabha constituency, while confirming the death toll said damage has been reported and the “situation is being continuously monitored.”

“The civilian administration, military and paramilitary have swung into action,” Singh wrote on the US social media company X’s platform.

The region’s top elected official, Omar Abdullah, said landslides occurred in several parts of Kathua district and the administration is carrying out “immediate relief, rescue and evacuation measures.”

It marked the second cloudburst in the region this week. Rescue operations are underway to locate the missing after a cloudburst struck Chositi village in Kishtwar district. At least 65 people are dead and over 100 injured, officials said.

Meanwhile, the death toll this year from monsoon rains and related incidents in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh has surpassed 260, according to an official statement released Sunday.
