Finnish Member of Parliament Commits Suicide Inside the Building

FINLAND – A Finnish member of parliament on Tuesday committed suicide inside the parliament building according to local reports. The Social Democratic Party lawmaker Eemeli Peltonen died in the Finnish Parliament House, with parliament’s communications office confirming that the first-term lawmaker had died.

The parliamentary work community said in a statement that it shares in his family’s grief.

“A death occurred in the morning. Emergency medical services, rescue units, and police authorities were alerted to the scene via the emergency center,” said Aaro Toivonen, the head of the parliament’s security department, as quoted by the Iltalehti daily.

Toivonen did not deny the information when asked by the Finnish broadcaster Yle whether the case involved a suicide.

He said he could not comment on the exact location of the death within the Parliament House or whether it involved an MP or a parliamentary employee.

“This is a very unfortunate and sad case,” added Toivonen.

Yle also reported that according to the police, the case does not appear to involve a crime.

Meanwhile, the police added that several patrol units and emergency medical services are currently on the scene.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed the death during a press briefing in city the eastern city of Kajaani, where the National Coalition Party’s parliamentary group is having its annual summer meeting.

“Some time ago, we received truly shocking news from parliament, our shared workplace. One of our colleagues has died on the parliamentary premises. This is very sad news,” Orpo was quoted as saying by Yle.

In June, Peltonen said on US social media company Facebook that he was dealing with health issues, including a kidney condition, and had been absent from parliament during the final weeks of the spring session and had sick leave over the summer.
