BULGARIA – Bulgaria have dismissed claims by the EU Commission that Russia jammed the GPS signal of Ursula von der Leyen’s plane on Sunday, saying that there’s no evidence of any GPS interference.
The Commission had earlier claimed that it had “received information from the Bulgarian authorities that they suspect that this apparent interference was carried out by Russia,” which now Sofia rejects.
This allegation was first reported by the British Financial Times newspaper.
On Thursday, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that Ursula’s plane never had any failure, but only a brief signal disruption which often occur in densely populated areas.
“After reviewing the flight records, we saw that there were no signs of concern on the part of the pilot. The plane hovered in the holding area for five minutes, and the signal quality was consistently good,” Rosen said.
The country’s Transport Minister Grozdan Karadzhov also seconded the idea, saying that there was no GPS interference of any kind.
“According to empirical data, radio intelligence, and the records of our civil and military authorities, there is not a single fact that supports the claim that the aircraft’s GPS signal was disrupted,” he said.
The Financial Times had alleged that the plane had lost GPS signal and was solely relying on paper maps to navigate and that Brussels blamed Russia – an allegation that was later picked and spread throughout the western media to the world.
Questions started after flight data showed no GPS signal had been lost in the flight.
After the discovery of the misinformation surrounding the flight, the Commission through its spokeswoman Arianna PodestĂ blamed Belgium claiming that it (EU Commision) had never spoken of a targeted attack and that it had no information of that sort.
Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, there has been numerous misinformation narratives shared from EU Commission, NATO and collective Europe meant to undermine and tarnish Russia’s image at international stage, but have later come to be debunked as just propaganda.
