Castle Peak Avalanche in California Leaves 10 Skiers Missing
USA – A Castle Peak avalanche in California’s Sierra Nevada left 10 skiers missing on Tuesday, according to authorities.
At least six skiers survived the avalanche and remained at the scene, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.
The avalanche was reported around 11:30 am local time.
The group, consisting of four guides and 12 clients, was in the Castle Peak area near Truckee when the avalanche struck.
Rescue efforts remain ongoing.
Earlier, the Sierra Avalanche Center had issued a warning, adding that the danger was as high as 4 out of 5.
“Large avalanches are expected to occur Tuesday, Tuesday night, and into at least early Wednesday morning across backcountry terrain,” the center said.
“Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended today. A widespread natural avalanche cycle is expected over the next 24 hours,” it added.
