USA – An assisted living facility fire in Massachusetts left at least 9 people dead and over 30 others injured in Fall River on Sunday night according to local fire department.
The fire broke out at 9:30 p.m. local time at the Gabriel House assisted living facility.
Of the over 30 victims taken to hospital, one was in critical condition as of Monday morning.
The fire escalated to five alarms, drawing about 50 firefighters to the scene, according to a statement by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.
Several occupants were declared dead at the scene and “many more” were transported to nearby hospitals in varying conditions, the department said, adding that five firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
About 70 people are believed to have been living in the facility. The cause of the fire wasn’t yet known as of reporting this.
