USA – The US government on Thursday announced that the Alaska mining and drilling ban imposed during the Biden administration had been revoked.
Interior Department officials called the decision a “major step in unlocking the energy potential” of the region, though environmentalists fear it will damage the huge natural areas of the US’ largest state.
“By rescinding the 2024 rule, we are following the direction set by President Trump to unlock Alaska’s energy potential, create jobs for North Slope communities, and strengthen American energy security,” said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
Drilling and mining in Alaska were restricted by US President Joe Biden, who served between Trump’s first and second terms, to protect wildlife in the National Petroleum Reserve in the region.
“By reversing the 2024 rule, the Department is taking action to strengthen American Energy Dominance and reduce reliance on foreign oil,” said a department statement.
It said that Alaskans had called on the government to “restore” the previous regulatory framework to allow drilling and mining.
