IRAN – In an aim to restart the stalled US-Iran nuclear negotiations, the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi might meet the US envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff in Istanbul on Friday Feb. 6.

The Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday that he had instructed Araghchi to pursue “fair and equitable negotiations” grounded in the principles of “dignity, prudence, and expediency.”

In a social media post, Pezeshkian said the directive was issued “in light of requests from friendly governments in the region” urging Iran to respond to a proposal by US President Donald Trump for negotiations.

He stressed, however, that any talks would require a “suitable environment” free from threats and “unreasonable expectations,” emphasizing that negotiations must take place “within the framework of our national interests.”

On Monday, segments of Iranian media reported that Pezeshkian had ordered the resumption of nuclear negotiations with the United States, which were stalled following the 12-day war with Israel in June 2025.

The reports said talks could restart soon, potentially at the level of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

Later, the same outlets said the reports on the immediate resumption of talks were unconfirmed.

The developments come amid heightened diplomatic activity, with several regional countries, including Turkey, reportedly working to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Tensions have escalated further after President Trump said a US military fleet is heading toward the region.
